Returning home after a bad breakup, Jordan Wood is eager to prove she can run her family’s store. Setting up a partnership with Declan Porter’s struggling adventure business might do the trick. But the handsome single dad is set in his ways—in business and in love. Can winning his—and his son’s—heart help them all heal?
Narelle’s Thoughts:
I enjoyed reading Winning His Trust, set in a small town in Arkansas. Jordan has returned to her home town to work in the family store after being betrayed by her former boyfriend and best friends. She is looking for purpose in her life, and questions if God thinks she’s a failure. Jordan offers to help Declan, who she knew from high school, improve the financial viability of his outdoor adventure business.
Declan has an adorable five year old son, River, who loves dinosaurs. River’s mother abandoned him, and left Declan with all the parenting and financial responsibilities. Declan needs his business to thrive, and a fun romance develops as Declan and Jordan get to know each. Jordan has a soft spot for River from the moment she first meets him while working in her family store.
Declan and Jordan have many obstacles to overcome on their journey to happily-ever-after. I loved the outdoor adventure aspects of the story, including hiking and fishing, and seeing Jordan step outside her comfort zone. I recommend Winning His Trust to contemporary romance readers who like single dad romances with a relevant faith element in the story.
Many thanks to the author for the advanced reader copy.
Billionaires get a lot of requests for money, but when my great-grandmother asked me to set up a scholarship at her alma mater, I was happy to oblige. Anything to make my GG smile.
But I made the mistake of mentioning that the Bible college where she met her one true love was gearing up for their annual Easter play. GG’s response? Stay in Kansas and lend a helping hand.
Such a terrible idea. Not only is it challenging to run a billion-dollar business remotely, it also means spending more time with Wendy Hall—the beautiful young widow who makes me want to help with more than just the play. So I’ll do my part at the concessions stand, and I’ll see what I can do about the secrets bringing Wendy down.
Easter is a time for new beginnings. A second chance at love might be the last thing Wendy wants, but I’m here to show her it’s exactly what she needs.
Can once upon a time turn into a happily ever after?

But a silly accident puts Sasha out of commission for all the planned adventures, and Caleb is sent to retrieve his former high school sweetheart from the airport. Eleven years should be enough time to have cooled the love Alanah and Caleb once shared. Should be, but apparently not. Six months of avoiding Caleb—worse—avoiding feelings about Caleb—is going to be a long time.

Desperate to salvage her career, Sadie begins devouring romance novels. Knowing she must devote herself to this confounding genre, she accepts an invitation to hole up at her friend’s beach duplex for the summer. Where better to witness love in bloom than on the beautiful North Carolina shore?
However, once ensconced in the charming ocean-front home with her sweet maltipoo Rio, she finds many ways to procrastinate. First there’s the beach, right outside her backdoor, with all its interesting visitors (research). Then there’s the free library she decides to build and set up by the back deck (She has to do something with all those romance novels). To say nothing of Sam Ford, the grumpy neighbor on the other side of the duplex . . . who she can’t seem to stop annoying.
A social butterfly by nature, Sadie soon gets to know all the beach regulars—sunbathers, walkers, and surfers alike. To whom does the ring belong? Sadie is convinced she needs to find the owner and save the man’s proposal from certain doom.

She loves a good romance–but doesn’t believe it happens in real life.
Sage Greene loves a good story, especially if it has a dashing and romantic hero. But her family’s legacy of broken relationships has convinced her that romance is strictly for fiction. Take her great-grandfather Harold Teller, for example—a selfish drunk who rejected his wife and son. But if that were so, why would he leave his house and property to her? Sensing there’s more to his story, Sage heads to Big Prairie determined to discover the truth for herself. Not even a quixotic encounter with a handsome stranger will sway her from her purpose.
He has stopped looking for love–it just isn’t out there for him.
As a counsellor, Grant Hillman knows what makes for a healthy relationship, but he’s certain that he’s a long way from being anyone’s romantic hero. Quiet, observant, and slightly fastidious seems to translate to boring, quirky, and too different, and he’s given up on finding love. So he shouldn’t be surprised when the one time he rescues a damsel in distress, it turns out she didn’t need a hero and she isn’t looking for romance.
Despite their inauspicious meeting—or perhaps because of it—Sage determines she and Grant will become the closest of friends. As they work together to learn the truth about Grandpa Teller, Sage discovers there’s more to Gramps than the bitter, grumpy old man everyone sees. And the more time she spends with Grant, the more she begins to wish she believed in romance after all. But Grant knows that the maxim “opposites attract” doesn’t mean “opposites will have a lasting, healthy relationship.” Especially when one of them doesn’t believe in romance to begin with.
As Sage and Grant work to untangle the threads of Grandpa Teller’s story, is it possible they could unravel a few assumptions of their own and write the beginning of another story altogether?

When a body is dragged onto the shore of the lake that borders their home, rumors and worries over the new man become assurances. But why has he involved her household in these gruesome shenanigans?
And why are Opal’s loved ones suddenly having “accidents”?
Loosely based on the little-known fairy tale of “Snow White and Rose Red” this mystery twists its way all along the banks of White Rock Lake during its heyday.
An old photo, a twister, and a friend being stalked …
A tornado rips through town, and Campbell McBride and her dad take shelter. Afterward, they try to help others who were hard hit, and a body is discovered in the debris of a cottage near their friends’ home. Was the man dead before the twister struck? The owners of the ruined cottage hire True Blue Investigations to help identify the victim and find out how he got on their property. Meanwhile, among the volunteers, Campbell meets her mother’s old school friend, Jackie. It seems Jackie married her mom’s former boyfriend—and now she has eyes on Campbell’s widowed father.

Welcome back to Hope Street Church, where friendships are formed, fresh starts are encouraged, and mysteries are solved . . .
The Hope Street Community Theater is staging It’s a Wonderful Life as a fundraiser, and Cooper and the Bible study group are all taking part. They’ve also managed to land the help of a famous Broadway director who’s trying to clean up his image after a scandal, and he travels to Richmond along with his star actress and staff. But the director’s entourage epitomize the worst of theater personalities, with petty grievances and jealousies stirring up more drama off the stage than on. And when the assistant director is found murdered in her hotel suite, the list of possible suspects is longer than a red carpet.
Unwilling to stand by with a murderer in their midst, Cooper and her friends get to work ferreting out clues and surveilling the staff, including a dangerously inept set technician as well as the director’s current and former love interests. Despite inexplicable and terrifying stage “accidents” threatening to derail their investigation and the play, the intrepid amateur sleuths know the show must go on. Their only prayer is to set a trap and successfully catch a killer before it’s curtains for Cooper . . .

The Year of Jubilee is a lyrical coming-of-age novel set against the backdrop of the turbulent South in the early 1960s.
The Mockingbird family has always lived peacefully in Jubilee, Kentucky, despite the divisions that mark their small town. Until the tense summer of 1963, when their youngest child, Isaac, falls gravely ill. Middle sister Grace, nearly fourteen, is determined to do whatever it takes to save her little brother. With her father and mother away at the hospital, Grace is left under the loving but inexperienced eye of her aunt June, with little to do but wait and worry. Inspired by a young teacher’s mission for change, she begins to flirt with danger—and with a gifted boy named Golden, who just might be the key to saving Isaac’s life. Then the unthinkable happens, and the world as she knows it shifts in ways she never could have imagined. Grace must decide what she believes amid the swirling, conflicting voices even of those she loves the most.
From gifted songwriter Cindy Morgan comes this lyrical, tender tale of a girl standing at the threshold of adulthood, learning the depths of the human heart and the bonds of family that bend, break, and bind together over and over again.
Narelle’s Thoughts:
I loved reading The Year of Jubilee, a powerful and inspiring young adult coming of age novel from debut author Cindy Morgan. The story is set in the summer of 1963 in the small town of Jubilee, Kentucky.
Grace is thirteen years old and her family background is complicated. She adores her father and seven year old brother, Isaac, but has difficult relationships with her mother, who she thinks of as Virginia rather than mama, and her older sister, Sissy. As the story unfolds, and we meet the extended family, we gain an understanding of the complex family relationships and past tragedies that have shaped the lives of Grace and her family.
I admired the courage of Grace’s English teacher, Miss Adams, who stood up for her beliefs and convictions despite potentially dangerous opposition and retribution. Grace’s aunt June was a breath of fresh air in her family, and a practical help when Grace’s parents were focused on Isaac’s care needs. Isaac’s journey is beautiful and heart breaking, and his strong faith touches the lives of many people.
Religious hypocrisy is explored in the story, and there were characters who said all the right Christian words and Bible quotes, but their attitudes, actions, and behaviour weren’t consistent with the good Christian image they presented to the world. The turbulent social change and political events taking place in 1963 impacted everyone who lived in Jubilee.
I loved Grace’s close relationship with her brother, and her desire to find solutions that would heal Isaac. Rojo, their pet rooster, was adorable. I recommend The Year of Jubilee to readers who like young adult coming of age Christian novels that deal with hard issues, including grief and loss, and have strong redemption and forgiveness themes in the story.

I shared a fun interview with Cindy at the Australasian Christian Writers blog.
When empty nester Mallory Farrell inherits her grandmother’s run-down tourist shop in Seaport, Oregon, it seems the only sensible thing to do is to sell it. But when her former secret crush, Grayson Matthews, wants to buy the property in order to complete his plans to redevelop the funky town’s business district into a soulless, cookie-cutter outdoor mall, Mallory digs in her heels and decides to renovate the property herself.
With a lot of hard work and a little bit of help, Mallory makes incredible progress turning the store into an eclectic home décor shop called Romancing the Home–all while trying to ignore the depressing and decrepit apartment she’s living in on the second floor. When the shop catches the eye of a popular renovation TV show producer, Mallory is thrilled–until it becomes clear that her apartment is to be part of the segment as well.
She’s tempted to abandon her dreams and the town under a cloud of shame. But perhaps there’s more to Grayson than meets the eye. Can he swallow his pride, change his plans, and help Mallory romance her own home–and possibly her life?
Narelle’s Thoughts:
I enjoyed reading Second Time Around by Melody Carlson. Mallory is a divorced interior designer with grown children. Her youngest daughter has recently married, and Mallory inherits her Grandma Bess’ tourist shop and the rundown upstairs apartment in Seaport on the Oregon Coast. Mallory is an empty nester, and she travels to Seaport to claim her inheritance and work out what she wants to do next in her life.
Seaport is like a character in the story. When Mallory was younger, she spent her summers with Grandma Bess. Grayson was the cute teenage lifeguard at the Seaport pool. He’s now a widower with grown children who owns a construction firm in Seaport. Grayson is interested in buying Grandma Bess’ shop, in a prime location on Main Street, and rejuvenating the town.
The romance thread in the story is low key, and the main focus is on Mallory’s journey as she navigates her inheritance situation. Grayson and Mallory are both independent people who don’t need to be in a relationship to enjoy their lives. They have raised their families and are looking toward the next stage in life.
I appreciated seeing a side character redeemed, and Mallory extending grace to that person. I recommend Second Time Around to contemporary fiction readers who like small town Christian fiction novels with mature characters and a second chances romance thread in the story.

“What I am looking for—what I desperately need, Mrs. Weiss—is a spy.”
Adolf Hitler is still a distant rumble on the horizon, but a Jewish spymaster and his courageous spies uncover a storm of Nazi terror in their own backyard.
In the summer of 1933, a man named Adolf Hitler is the new and powerful anti-Semitic chancellor of Germany. But in Los Angeles, no-nonsense secretary Liesl Weiss has concerns much closer to home. The Great Depression is tightening its grip and Liesl is the sole supporter of two children, an opinionated mother, and a troubled brother.
Leon Lewis is a Jewish lawyer who has watched Adolf Hitler’s rise to power—and the increase in anti-Semitism in America—with growing alarm. He believes Nazi agents are working to seize control of Hollywood, the greatest propaganda machine the world has ever known. The trouble is, authorities scoff at his dire warnings.
When Liesl loses her job at MGM, her only choice is to work with Leon Lewis and the mysterious Agent Thirteen to spy on her friends and neighbors in her German American community. What Leon Lewis and his spies find is more chilling—and more dangerous—than any of them suspected.
Code Name Edelweiss is based on a true story, unknown until recent years: How a lone Jewish lawyer and a handful of amateur spies discovered and foiled Adolf Hitler’s plan to take over Hollywood.
Narelle’s Thoughts:
I loved reading Code Name Edelweiss, a historical fiction spy novel set in Hollywood in 1933. Based on a true story, this fabulous book challenged me to think about the massive and horrifying potential implications of what was happening in 1933 around the globe, particularly in Europe and the United States, when Hitler gained control of Germany.
Being an Aussie, Hollywood and Germany are a long way from home. That said, Hollywood films in the 1930’s were played in cinemas around Australia. If the Friends of New Germany propaganda machine in Los Angeles had taken control of the Hollywood studios, who knows how many more people, especially Jewish people, would have perished as a consequence of Hitler’s indoctrination activities during his evil reign of terror.
The stakes are high, and Liesl is drawn into a dangerous world working undercover as a secretary in the heart of the Friends of New Germany organisation. Agent Thirteen is also spying for the Jewish lawyer who employed Liesl. He has infiltrated the organisation, and is unaware of Liesl’s true identity.
I read this book quickly, and couldn’t put it down. I was awake until 2am, close to the end, and I finished reading the book when I woke in the morning.
I enjoyed reading Stephanie Landsem’s debut novel, In a Far-Off Land, and Code Name Edelweiss exceeded my expectations. I recommend Code Name Edelweiss to historical fiction readers who like intriguing spy novels with romantic elements, suspense, and faith themes woven beautifully into a story set in 1930’s Hollywood.

Redemption and second chances abound in this small-town, single-mom romance with a former bad boy set at Easter.
Connor Hamelin’s Kansas farm boss offers wages through the winter if he’ll try out for the annual passion play. Connor’s been drifting, but sticking around sounds good. Figuring he can channel Judas, he auditions… and is cast as Jesus. Ugh, but maybe he’ll finally understand all the religious nuts in his life.
Single mom Zoey Matthews helps in the wardrobe department for the local passion play as well as participating in crowd scenes with her young daughter. Zoey might be intrigued by the unlikely guy cast as Jesus in this year’s production, but she’s not looking for romance, especially not with an unbeliever too similar to her bad-boy ex.
Connor doesn’t deserve a chance to make amends for his past nor another chance at love. He definitely doesn’t deserve the forgiveness of the Savior he’s portraying… but God is a God of redemption and second chances.
Her heart longs for a hero. He’s no one’s idea of a champion.

Joel Bennett has always known Serena Hayes as his sister’s gregarious best friend. In the three years since Lacey began college, Serena became a regular houseguest, but lately, she’s absent more than not. When Joel discovers she’s in an abusive relationship, protectiveness from within roars to life.
With only a part-time job to support her and nowhere to go, Serena fears leaving her current relationship would jeopardize her chances of graduating college. After a brutal attack leaves her no choice, she courageously moves out. On her journey toward regaining confidence, self-worth, and independence, Joel falls in beside her, encouraging her. The way he emulates Godly love and compassion draws her close—not just to him, but to the God who can satisfy her longing for love better than any man,
Attraction sizzles between them, but events from their pasts cast shadows of doubt. When the unthinkable happens, can Serena open her heart to a second chance at love, or is she destined to be alone?
Narelle’s Thoughts:
I enjoyed reading A Worthy Heart, set in Sacramento, California. Serena is in her final year of college, and she recently left her Dorm to move in with her boyfriend. The boyfriend love bombed her at the start of their relationship, and it wasn’t until Serena was living in his house that she realized she’d unknowingly put herself in a domestic violence situation. Serena isn’t a Christian at the start of the story and, being a student, money is tight.
Joel is Serena’s best friend’s brother. He’s a Christian who works as a bank teller and shares his home with his sister, Lacey. The story opens with Serena driving to Lacey’s birthday party in the city. Serena is involved in a car accident that wasn’t her fault. Joel is travelling behind her, sees the accident, and stops to help Serena. He drives Serena home because her car needs to be towed, and that’s when Joel witnesses Serena’s boyfriend physically hitting her.
I loved how Serena and Joel’s friends to more romance unfolds in the story. It’s not a love triangle. Serena breaks off the relationship with her abusive boyfriend before anything has the potential to happen between her and Joel. Past decisions impact their present relationship, and I liked how Serena’s new faith didn’t automatically fix all the issues they needed to address.
Joel has his own issues to work through, including his relationship with his father. The faith element is strong and an organic part of the story, and includes redemption and forgiveness themes. The story is a clean read and realistically addresses difficult situations with sensitivity. I recommend A Worthy Heart to contemporary romance readers looking for a compelling friends to more and best friend’s brother romance with a strong faith element and tough issues, including domestic violence, addressed in the story.
Police Chief Autumn Long is fighting to keep her job in the quiet Alaska town of Shadow Gap when an unexpected string of criminal activity leaves her with a wounded officer, unexplained murders, and even an attack on her own father. Despite her mistrust of outsiders, she turns to Grier Brenner, a newcomer who seems to have the skills and training Autumn needs to face this threat to her community.
Grier is in Alaska for the same reason so many others are–to disappear–when Chief Long enlists his help. He emerges from the shadows and proves his mettle, but his presence in her life could be a deadly trap for them both. If his secret is exposed, all will be lost. And he’s not sure even Autumn could save him.
As the stakes rise and the dangers increase, Autumn and Grier must rely on each other to extinguish the deadly threats.
Narelle’s Thoughts:
I enjoyed reading Cold Light of Day, the first book in Elizabeth Goddard’s Missing in Alaska romantic suspense series. Autumn is the police chief in a sleepy Alaskan town with a low crime rate. Dead bodies start turning up, and her role as police chief is in jeopardy. At the start of the story we learn that Autumn’s mother drowned in the Caribbean during a family vacation, and her father is the retired police chief who’s also an alcoholic. Autumn is under pressure to prove herself and keep her town safe.
Grier is an intriguing hero, and a man of mystery who’s hiding out in Shadow Gap. He sees a woman in the icy lake water at risk of drowning, and he rescues her. Grier has professional diving skills, and he agrees to help Autumn with ongoing police investigations.
Autumn and Grier are drawn to each other, but he’s an outsider and she’s slow to trust. Grier refuses to talk about his previous life, which complicates their relationship. A lovely friends to more romance develops as they’re pushed together due to their lives being in danger. Secrets from the past threaten to tear them apart as they work to solve the mystery deaths in Shadow Gap.
The suspense plot intensifies the tension to the story. I kept turning the page, wanting to know what happens next, and I didn’t pick how the ending would unfold. The Alaskan scenery is stunning, and I loved experiencing Alaska with Autumn and Grier. I recommend Cold Light of Day to romantic suspense readers who like fast paced stories with many twists and turns combined with a satisfying romance and a light faith element in the story.

Award-winning photographer Mason Montgomery is back in Pine Valley, Kentucky. Hopefully, for good, if his business proposal is accepted. On paper, he’s the perfect buyer for Forget-Me-Not Photography. Too bad the seller, Ol’ Man Rowe, doesn’t see it that way. He’s looking for a family man to take over, and Mason’s bachelor status doesn’t fit the bill.
For shy Lily Anne Dawson, life has not turned out the way she’d hoped. Working at her mother’s bakery and editing for the local newspaper is a far cry from her journalistic dream. She’s a failure. A lonely failure worrying about infertility with no romantic prospects in sight.
That all changes when a decade-old promise to marry on Valentine’s Day pushes the two together at their high school reunion. The impromptu proposal offers a solution to their problems. But marriage requires honesty—and both have secrets. Secrets that could make or break their budding love.
Narelle’s Thoughts:
I enjoyed reading The Valentine Proposal by Beth Pugh, set in a small town in Kentucky. Mason had a crush on Lily Anne during high school. She ran the school newspaper, he was the photographer, and they made a crazy promise. If they’re both still single in ten years time, they’d get married on Valentine’s Day.
Fast forward ten years, and Lily Anne is back in town working in her mother’s bakery. She dreams about getting a national syndication journalism job, but instead has moved home after being retrenched from her job at a Lexington newspaper. Mason is a successful photographer who has travelled the world, and his family owns an Inn in town. He wants to buy a local photography business, but the owner rejects Mason’s offer because he’s not married. At their high school reunion, Mason gets down on one knee and proposes, Lily Anne says yes, and suddenly they’re planning a wedding.
The story has some fake relationship elements because both Mason and Lily Anne had reasons to marry that were more for their own convenience than love. Lily Anne’s mother insists they do marriage preparation meetings with their pastor, which challenges Mason and Lily Anne to consider why they’re getting married.
A fun romance develops as they explore whether or not old feelings can be rekindled and evolve into a love that lasts a lifetime. I recommend The Valentine Proposal to contemporary romance readers who like high school reunion romances with a relevant faith element in the story.
