Book Recommendation – Once Upon a Silent Night by Kimberly Rae Jordan

Book Description

Unwilling to fulfill her parents’ expectations for her, she left behind a comfortable life in pursuit of her dream.

Alessia Talbot had been raised with the expectation that she’d go to law school and join the family law firm, but that isn’t what she wants for her life. Determined to achieve her dream of a career in music, she strikes out on her own. Her new life away from her family is a reality check, and she soon finds her life on a downward slide.

Two years on, her dream is still out of reach, and she’s nearing rock bottom. With hope nearly gone and feeling no joy in the season that was once her favorite, Alessia wanders into a church in search of warmth and some quiet.

He gave up his life in order to bring his brothers to justice.

Gio Morgan (formerly known as Giovanni Moretti) was born into a mob family, but he’d never fit in. When he made the decision to testify against his mob boss brothers, he knew it meant the end to that life.

He now lives in New Hope Falls in order to be close to his half-sister, Cara. He is trying to build a new life for himself, and part of that is participating in the church’s 24 hour a day open door ministry for the month of December.

Will a connection forged in the quiet of a church during the early morning hours be the start of something new? Or will it lead to heartbreak if the draw of a dream is too powerful to resist?

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Once Upon a Silent Night, Book 4.5 in Kimberly Rae Jordan’s New Hope Falls series that can be read as a stand-alone story. The minor characters from the previous stories, and the hints regarding their unique backgrounds, were intriguing. I want to read more books in the series and spend more time with the characters in New Hope Falls.

We meet Alessia in early December when winter is setting in and she’s sleeping in her car. I was surprised to learn that she came from a wealthy family, had a college degree, and her circumstances had effectively forced her into homelessness. Alessia epitomises the plight of the working poor. She has a job in a bar but she doesn’t earn enough money to pay for a roof over her head, despite living in a small Washington State town. Alessia is stubborn, resourceful, and starting to question the big sacrifices she has made in pursuit of a seemingly elusive singing career.

Gio’s background is fascinating and he has a maturity gained from surviving tough situations. He volunteered to do the graveyard shift at his church’s open door ministry, and figured he’d likely be alone for most, if not all, of his shift. Alessia turns up in the early hours of the morning and he’s curious to learn her story. She becomes a regular visitor during Gio’s shifts, and an unexpected friendship develops that has potential for more.

Once Upon a Silent Night is a sweet romance with depth and strong faith elements that explore the true meaning and blessings of Christmas. Highly recommended for contemporary Christian romance readers who like Christmas stories.

Book Recommendation – Joy to the World – A Christmas Regency Romance collection

Book Description:

Inspirational Regency romance with a Christmas twist from three best-selling authors

In Joy to the World, three popular authors come together to offer a heartwarming collection of holiday Regency romance. Based on lines from a beloved Christmas carol, these three novellas in one book have depth, faith, and satisfying stories all packed into the perfect length for readers to curl up and take a brief break from their holiday busyness.

“Heaven and Nature Sing” by Carolyn Miller
Two music lovers, deeply devoted to each other, were on the brink of engagement when family circumstances drove them apart. How can they ever overcome their obligations and fears to find their way back into each other’s arms?

“Far as the Curse is Found” by Amanda Barratt
One winter night, a woman struggling to provide for her illegitimate child encounters a scarred veteran of the Napoleonic Wars on the streets of London. Can love conquer the darkness of two broken pasts?

“Wonders of His Love” by Erica Vetsch
A Scots portrait painter with a hidden identity finds work at a noble manor house over the holidays. He never imagined he’d fall in love with the emotionally frozen widow there. Now he wants nothing more than to thaw her heart.

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I loved reading the three novellas in the Joy to the World Regency romance collection. The Christmas carol features in each story and highlights the faith journey of the characters. This is a great collection to read if you like Christmas romance stories with characters who open their Bibles and consider how their faith impacts their life.

Heaven and Nature Sing by Carolyn Miller has a charming house party setting over the Christmas season and a cast of endearing characters who kept me turning the page to find out what happens next. Difficult circumstances forced Edith to decline George’s marriage proposal and she has lived with regrets.

Second chances is one of my favourite romance tropes, and I enjoyed journeying with Edith and George as they overcame obstacles and dealt with the issues keeping them apart. Their romance is fun, heartwarming and a delight to read.

Far as the Curse is Found by Amanda Barratt is a heavier read and opens with Jenny in a dire situation. Jenny’s life story is heartbreaking and, despite all the horrible circumstances, she hasn’t lost her faith and hope in a loving God.

Dwight is a reclusive Earl who struggles with his physical and emotional scars from the Napoleonic War. He rescues Jenny and her baby daughter when they’re out of options by offering Jenny stable employment in his household.

Drawing on beauty and the beast themes, a poignant and heartfelt friends-to-more romance develops as two broken people overcome their scars and open themselves to the possibility of love.

Wonders of His Love by Erica Vetsch is a different worlds romance that brings together Hamish, a struggling Scottish artist and Cilla, a young widow who would be a duchess if her late husband had lived. Cilla is in peerage no-mans-land with a baby daughter who isn’t a heir and a controlling mother-in-law who wants Cilla to marry well. The dowager has commissioned Hamish to paint the official portraits of the duke and duchess for Christmas.

Hamish and Cilla are drawn to each, despite their uneven social status. Hamish is an adorable and charming hero who aspires to make a name for himself in the art world. A lovely friendship blossoms and Cilla is challenged to move out of her comfort zone and seek her heart’s desire.

I highly recommend Joy to the World for fans of Christian Regency romance who enjoy Christmas stories.

Book Recommendation – Restoring Fairhaven by Carolyn Miller

Book Description:

Samantha Green of Greener Gardens gets more than she bargained for when she is employed to restore the overgrown gardens of the estate owned by a reclusive writer, whose romances about unrequited love have become bestsellers and movies, despite never having a happy ending. New to this role, Sam is determined to succeed, despite facing challenges with the business and her family.

Max Fairhaven just wants to be left alone. But the green-thumbed intruder to his island hideaway is stubborn, and her quick wits and sunny disposition soon get under his skin. Between banter and garden renovation she gradually brings some much needed life to this widower, as he begins to engage with the real world.

Can happily-ever-afters be found in real life as well as fiction?

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I really enjoyed reading Restoring Fairhaven and escaping to the gorgeous Carolinas island setting. Carolyn Miller is known for her regency romance series, and her first published Christian contemporary romance includes story elements that will delight her regency romance fans.

Max Fairhaven is a proper English gentleman who has hidden away from the world and poured his melancholy into his best selling fiction books. Samantha Green is the hard working gardening contractor who disrupts Max’s insular world and inspires him to evaluate his life choices.

Drawing on the beauty and the beast fairytale, a fun, sweet and faith-filled romance develops into something more than friends. Max and Samantha negotiate many obstacles and embarrassing moments on their journey to happily-ever-after. Highly recommended.

Book Recommendation ~ Organized Backup (Luella Linley: License to Meddle) by Meredith Resce

Book Description:

Regency romance author, Luella Linley, arranges her characters’ lives, making sure that they weather all storms and live happily-ever-after. Her characters are putty in her hands, but her 21st Century adult children are not so easily organized. When her daughter, Megan, asks for support with an inappropriate situation at work, Luella decides Megan should get a boyfriend to intimidate her boss. The cop who just pulled Luella over for speeding is a likely candidate.

Cam Fletcher is expecting to be interviewed by a famous author. Instead of sharing insights into his job working in the police force, he is sharing a meal with the famous author and her daughter, Megan. When left alone with Megan, Cam wonders when the interview will begin. The parents’ extended absence gives him a clue, which Megan confirms. Luella Linley is playing matchmaker, but is he willing to play the game?

Narelle’s Thoughts:

Regency romance author Luella Linley has the best of intentions…and can’t understand why her children don’t appreciate her talent for matchmaking. A fake engagement, a daughter in trouble, and a handsome policeman playing the hero—what could possibly go wrong?

Megan and her siblings have learned to manage their mother when she attempts to push boundaries and forgets her children are not characters in her books. Megan also has work issues due to her sleazy boss, and she appreciates Cam’s help and support because she’s stuck in a difficult situation. Cam is an adorable hero who is more than willing to rescue Megan and pretend he’s the doting boyfriend. Until it’s not pretend anymore for either Megan or Cam…

This funny and charming romantic comedy from Meredith Resce that also touches on the more serious issues of faith and workplace relations will put a smile on your face and give you food for thought. Highly recommended.

Book Recommendation – Remember Me (A Chapel Cove Romance Book 1) by Marion Ueckermann

Book Description:

What she most needed was right there in front of her all along.

At the age of thirteen, Clarise Aylward and her two best friends each pen a wish list of things they want to achieve. Deciding to bury a tin containing their life goals, the friends vow to unearth the metal box once they’ve all turned forty. But as the decades pass and each girl chases her dreams, the lists are forgotten.

Heath Brock has been in love with Clarise for over twenty-seven years and counting. As a young man, he’d plucked up the courage to ask her out on a Valentine’s date, but the couple succumbed to pent-up passions, sending Clarise dashing for the other side of the country.

Years after Clarise’s sudden departure, Heath serves as youth pastor. He’d held out hope of Clarise’s return, but buries his feelings for his childhood sweetheart when he learns she’s married.

Almost penniless, divorced, and with nowhere to go, Clarise returns home to Chapel Cove, her future uncertain. She’s approaching forty with her dreams in tatters. When old feelings resurface, Clarise wonders whether she’s ever really fallen out of love with Heath.

What’s the man of God to do when his old flame returns, seemingly to stay?

With Clarise back in town, Heath is determined not to repeat past mistakes, but if he has anything to say about it, never again will he lose the only woman he’s ever loved.

Welcome to Chapel Cove, Oregon, where life begins at forty.

As their fortieth birthdays loom, three childhood friends return unexpectedly to their home town. Stunning coastline, a harbor against life’s storms, and a welcoming community await them. Hurt by challenges, disappointments, and failures; reminded of their unfulfilled hopes and dreams, they’re offered a fresh start. And, if they’re brave enough to accept it, a second chance at love. Will they allow God to safely anchor them in their hearts’ home, or will doubt and uncertainty drive them to repeat their old mistakes?

Discover this small town filled with love, hope, and faith, in Chapel Cove Romances, a series of sweet and clean standalone Christian stories from three bestselling authors.

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Remember Me and visiting with the small town community in Chapel Cove. Reese (Clarise) returns to her hometown a broken woman with big emotional scars. Her high flying days as a supermodel living a luxurious lifestyle are a fading memory. Her cheating ex-husband, who was also her agent/business manager, has left her destitute. Reese pawned her engagement ring to pay for her flight from NYC, and she’s staying with her parents in her childhood home with no prospects and her fortieth birthday looming.

For years, Heath has lived a modest lifestyle in a trailer beside the beach. He became a Christian after Clarise left town, and he’s now working as a youth pastor with a heart for helping people. Like Reese, he has regrets about their past relationship. He wishes she’d never left town to chase her modelling career dreams. He’s watched her high profile career from afar while quietly living his life in the beautiful coastal town. He is the boy next door, and the supermodel is way out of his league.

Reunion romance is one of my favorite tropes, and this story delivers on the promise of a sweet and heartfelt romance complicated by Reese and Heath’s history and misbeliefs about themselves and each other. I like reading romances with older characters who have a maturity and life experiences that can give them a different perspective.

I will confess that I’m not usually a fan of romance stories with heroes who are pastors. A few decades ago, a large number of CCR’s that I read included pastor heroes. I became bored reading the same old storylines. Despite my prejudices, I loved Heath’s character more than Reese’s. His down-to-earth and laid back approach to life, combined with his genuine faith, had me cheering for him to win Reese’s heart. I highly recommend Remember Me to readers who enjoy small town reunion romance stories with a strong faith element.

Full disclosure: The lovely Chapel Cove authors have invited me to write a Chapel Cove romance. I’m enjoying getting to know the characters and binge reading the series in preparation for writing my Chapel Cove story.
