Book Recommendation – Uneasy Street by Becky Wade

Book Description:

Once upon a time Max Cirillo and Sloane Madison were close friends and business partners. But when their business relationship imploded, so did the friendship.

Now, four years later, Max is a rich CEO. Sloane’s a not-so-rich etiquette expert who returns to Maine to serve as her niece’s temporary guardian and help the girl search for her birth father. Sloane and her niece move into a darling garage apartment but Sloane’s joy in their accommodations soon turns to horror when she realizes their apartment belongs to Max. Thanks to an unbreakable lease, she’s stuck living right next door to him.

Max pulled strings to bring Sloane into his orbit because he needs closure on what went wrong between them. Quickly, though, his scheming comes back to bite him. The world might view him as a cold-hearted rake, but this one woman has dangerous power over his emotions.

They’ll have no choice but to confront their history—and the undeniable spark between them—while living side by side on uneasy street.

Discover witty humor, rich emotion, banter, and charm within the pages of this sweet enemies-to-lovers romance!

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Uneasy Street, the third book in Becky Wade’s Sons of Scandal series set in coastal Maine. Max is a self-made multimillionaire who’s successful despite the circumstances of his birth. He’s the illegitimate son of Felix, a wealthy and famous retired NFL quarterback who cheated on his second wife with Max’s mother, their live-in housekeeper, who raised Max on Felix’s sprawling Maine estate until the scandal broke. Max has a difficult and complicated relationship with his father.

Sloane left Maine four years ago and moved to California when her close friendship and business relationship with Max soured. They co-founded the tech company that made Max wealthy. Sloane’s share in the company was bought out for modest sum prior to the business becoming a massive success. She’s now an etiquette expert and trainer who runs her own business.

Sloane returns to Maine to care for her niece, Ivy, while Ivy’s adopted parents are working overseas. They rent an apartment above the garage on a well-known estate. Sloane is shocked to discover that Max is their landlord who lives in the mansion beside their apartment. Max wants closure from Sloane on what went wrong four years ago. Sloane has her own issues with Max and how he removed her from the company she’d co-founded.

Their enemies to love romance is delightful, sweet, and complicated by the emotional baggage they’re carrying from their broken relationship and dysfunctional family of origins. I love how issues relating to trust, redemption and forgiveness are explored in the story. Ivy is on a mission to find her birth father, and I love how the plot twists in her search play out. The heirloom jewellery mystery is an intriguing part of the story. Felix’s ex-wives have unfinished business that’s tied up in a satisfying subplot and series conclusion.

I recommend Uneasy Street to contemporary romance readers who like enemies to love romances with depth that include second chances, forced proximity, intriguing mysteries, family drama, and relevant faith threads in the story.

Book Recommendation – Meddling with Mistletoe by Liz Johnson

Book Description:

Whitney Garrett is preparing to enter culinary school in the spring, but first she has to sell enough homemade pies at the local Christmas markets to pay her tuition. When her oven breaks, Whitney asks Marie Sloan, proprietor of the Red Door Inn, if she can use the inn’s kitchen to keep up with her orders. Marie agrees, with a catch: Whitney has to watch the three Sloan children and cook breakfasts for the Red Door in return.

The inn is busy with holiday guests–including Aretha Franklin Sloan’s perpetually single nephew Daniel and Ruby, a businesswoman in town to purchase Aretha’s antiques store. Intent on making a Christmas match for the two, Aretha enlists Whitney’s help in her schemes. But the deeper Whitney gets, the more she realizes that Ruby is definitely not the right woman for Daniel–and the more she thinks that she just might be his perfect match.

Cuddle up for some warm holiday cheer as New York Times bestselling author Liz Johnson explores the unforeseen consequences of meddling with mistletoe when love is on the line.

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Meddling with Mistletoe, a delightful Christmas contemporary romance set on Prince Edward Island. Whitney is determined to prove to her parents that she can commit to culinary school. She’s busy baking pies to sell at the Christmas markets to pay for her expensive tuition. When her oven dies and the island repair man is away on a long vacation, she needs to find another baking option ASAP.

Whitney offers to baby sit for her friends, Marie and Seth, in exchange for using their oven and commercial kitchen facilities at The Red Door Inn. Marie asks Whitney to provide breakfast for a few guests who will be staying at the inn for the Christmas season.

Daniel is a Chief Financial Officer who lives in Toronto. He travels to Prince Edward Island and stays at the inn while assisting his aunt in negotiating the sale of her antiques store. Daniel’s aunt hatches a plan to matchmake him with another guest at the Inn. She’s single and negotiating the deal to buy the antiques store on behalf of her employer.

Daniel’s aunt enlists Whitney’s help in her matchmaking scheme, unaware that Daniel and Whitney are drawn to each other. A heartwarming romance unfolds as Daniel and Whitney navigate obstacles in their path to happily-ever-after. Marie and Seth’s young children are adorable and add many lighthearted moments.

It was fun catching up with Marie and Seth from The Red Door Inn, the first book in Liz Johnson’s Prince Edward Island Dreams series. I recommend Meddling with Mistletoe to contemporary romance readers who like charming small town Christmas romances with matchmaking hijinks, delicious homemade pies, and relevant faith threads in the story.

Book Recommendation – Kate Landry Has a Plan by Rebekah Millet

Book Description:

I turned to him, and he winked at me. Winked! We needed clear lines in place between us. We would not be flirty friends. We’d be friends, period. The sooner I made that distinction, the better.

Forty-year-old Kate Landry’s carefully planned life has become as messy as the powdered sugar on her famous beignets. Juggling the responsibilities of running her café, raising her teenage niece, and the emotional baggage from her breakup, Kate finds her world once again turned upside down when her first-ever crush, Micah Guidry, returns to town as the hunky local librarian.

As Kate struggles to implement her plans to expand her café amid the New Orleans Mardi Gras madness and the meddling of her conniving ex-fiancé, Micah becomes the unwitting hero of her misadventures, stirring up feelings she thought she’d long buried. How can falling in love in the Big Easy be this hard?

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Kate Landry Has a Plan, the second book in Rebekah Millet’s Beignets for Two series set in New Orleans. Kate is a busy single parent who’s raising her thirteen-year-old niece, Hayley. They live above Beignets and Books Cafe, that Kate inherited from her grandmother in the Garden District on Saint Charles Avenue.

It’s Mardi Gras season and Kate holds functions in her renovated cafe courtyard. The story opens with a Bridezilla delaying Kate at the cafe, which makes her run late to collect Hayley from the library. Kate calls the librarian and leaves an apology message.

When Kate arrives at the library, she’s mortified to discover the new temporary librarian, who listened to her embarrassing phone message, is Micah. He was Kate’s first crush in seventh grade and their library meet cute is awkward and amusing.

Micah’s back in town to help care for his father after living in Colorado since college. The story is in first person from Kate’s point of view, and we learn more about Micah, including why his marriage didn’t last, as the story progresses.

I enjoyed journeying with Kate in the story. She’s a go-getter with business smarts and a quirky sense of humor who adores her niece. Hayley loves hanging out at the library, which means Kate can’t avoid seeing Micah. Hayley is also desperate to own a puppy.

Kate and Micah’s romance is delightful and sweet. They have many problems to overcome and I love how all the story threads came together in a satisfying story ending. The charming New Orleans setting, with its unique culture, food and delicious beignets, provided a beautiful backdrop for the story. The fascinating and quirky cast of side characters, and the animals in the story, added many humorous moments.

I recommend Kate Landry Has a Plan to contemporary romance readers who like midlife second chances romances set in New Orleans with family drama and a relevant faith element in the story.

Many thanks to Bethany House for the advanced reader copy. I originally posted my review as part of JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz in March 2025.

Book Recommendation – Sometimes You Stay by Liz Johnson

Book Description:

He was never going to leave the island, and she wasn’t going to stay. But if she walked away, she would always wonder . . .

For digital content creator Cretia Martin, home is wherever her carry-on suitcase lands. And it’s constantly landing in new places as she travels the world. She’s never been interested in settling in one spot–after all, houses are just places that collect junk and tie you down. But when she literally bumps into local dog breeder Finn Chaffey on Prince Edward Island and all the tools of her trade end up in the harbor, she can’t exactly leave until she gets things sorted out.

Finn is horrified by the part he played in the accident and offers to help, arranging for Cretia to stay with a friend at the beautiful Red Door Inn. The longer Cretia is forced to remain in one place, the more she discovers what she’s been missing with life on the road–and the more she wants to see Finn and his business succeed. But helping him means staying put, the one thing she always swore she wouldn’t do, and risking the only thing she’s never put on the line–her heart.

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Sometimes You Stay, set on the beautiful Prince Edward Island in Canada. Cretia is a nomadic digital content creator and influencer who grew up in Arizona. She’s financially comfortable and fiercely independent as she travels the globe year round, sharing her travel adventures with her three million plus followers, and living out of her suitcase and backpack. When an accident sends her flying off the boardwalk in North Rustico on the PEI north shore and into the harbor, her anticipated two day stay on the island is extended by circumstances that are outside her control.

Finn feels terrible about his role in Cretia’s accidental dip in the harbor. He’s determined to make amends and help Cretia. He breeds Newfoundland puppies and trains them for search and rescue work, and he has a menagerie of adorable animals who live in his barn.

Finn has zero interest in new technology and international travel. He lives on the family farm that was established by his great grandfather and runs the family dog breeding business that was built up by his father and grandfather.

Cretia is welcomed by Marie at the charming Red Door Inn and she spends her time helping Finn with his animals. Cretia is challenged to think about why her dysfunctional childhood has driven her to travel and not put down roots.

A delightful romance unfolds as Finn and Cretia are drawn together and consider if they could become more than friends. Finn falls hard for Cretia, despite knowing she will leave him. Cretia has never wanted to stay anywhere until she meets Finn and the friendly island community who embrace her as one of their own.

The side characters and animals added many LOL moments and I loved seeing characters from Liz Johnson’s previous Prince Edward Island books in the story. I recommend Sometimes You Stay to contemporary romance readers who like opposites attract vacation romances with forced proximity, adorable animals, found family themes and relevant faith elements in the story.

Many thanks to Revell and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy.
