BILLIE RADCLIFFE HAS A SECRET

And she isn’t sharing it with anyone, including Zach Montford. Even though she feels an instant connection with the good-looking banker and youth leader, she’s wary of rejection. Besides she’s only in the close-knit beach community until she meets the one man who can fill in the blanks about her history.

Zach hopes his temporary stint with the church will help him decide whether to go into full-time ministry. Though his career plans are uncertain, he’s sure about his growing feelings for Billie. When a shocking revelation throws everything into question, Zach and Billie have a chance to put the past to rest…and walk into the future together.

CHAPTER ONE Excerpt:

Billie Radcliffe walked barefoot on her timber deck and placed a glass of ice water on the large wooden outdoor table. She inhaled the salty sea breeze, propped her sunglasses on her nose and stared out at the vast expanse of ocean and the golden sand dunes of Sapphire Bay Beach.

The steady pounding of the pristine waves on the shore calmed her overactive mind. She lifted her long dark ponytail off her neck, perspiration clinging to her skin. It was hot enough to swim this afternoon after her sister, Julia, and her new brother-in-law, Sean, returned from their walk in the small township of Sapphire Bay.

During the three weeks since she’d moved into the beach house, Billie felt like she was living in a different universe. A world with a slower pace of life than Sydney. A place where she could relax and ponder the life-changing events of the past few months.

The doorbell chimed and she glanced at the time on her phone. Julia had a key, and her parents weren’t due to arrive for a few hours. They had left later this morning than planned and Billie hoped the Christmas Eve traffic on the Princes Highway wouldn’t slow their progress on the long drive south from Sydney.

Billie strolled through the spacious living room into the hall and front entrance, the cream floor tiles cool under her feet. She opened the door and her welcoming smile faltered on her lips.

A good-looking guy wearing shorts and a T-shirt stood on her doorstep. His brown hair was cropped short, military style, and he held a small suitcase. A backpack was slung over his broad shoulders, and a late model SUV sat on her drive.

Zach. Julia and Sean’s church friend. He didn’t look anything like the guy she had imagined.

He held out his hand. “I’m Zach, and you must be Billie.” His smile lit up his eyes, an intriguing dark blue with a hint of green reminiscent of the ocean behind her house.

She shook his hand, a tingle of awareness radiating up her bare arm. “Yes, I’m Billie. Please come in.” She let go of his hand and stepped back, realizing she’d held on longer than necessary. A smile tugged at her lips and she smoothed down the skirt of her cotton sundress, recovering her composure. “We weren’t expecting you until tonight.”

“My boss sent us home early.” Zach followed her into the living room, leaving his suitcase and bag beside the staircase next to the open plan kitchen.

She grinned and held his warm gaze. “Sounds like my kind of boss.”

His eyes sparkled. “He’s a good guy.”

Billie nodded and headed into the kitchen. “I’ve made pasta sauce for dinner. Julia and Sean will be back soon, and my parents should be here for dinner.” She opened the fridge. “Would you like a drink?”

“Water is fine, thanks.” He sat on a stool at the granite-topped island in the center of the modern kitchen.

“No problem.” She poured two glasses of water and added ice. Air-conditioning purred in the background, cooling the interior of the house. “Please make yourself at home, and I’ll show you to your room upstairs.”

“Thanks.” He sipped his water. “Have I interrupted your plans for the afternoon?”

“Not at all. The clinic where I work is closed until the New Year. I just finished wrapping all my Christmas presents, and I was going to read out on the deck.” A Christmas tree strung with fairy lights and ornaments stood tall in the far corner of the living room. Colorful presents were positioned around the base of the tree.

“Sounds like a nice afternoon.” He glanced around the kitchen. “Julia mentioned you’re a podiatrist.”

“Yes, I’m the feet lady.”

He raised an eyebrow. “That’s an interesting way to describe your job.”

She chuckled. “I’m used to being teased about my job, so now I tell everyone up front and get the awkwardness out of the way.”

“I like your attitude.”

She gave him a dazzling smile. “I think you can stay this week, now that you’ve passed the feet test.”

“I’m glad to hear it. And you have a great house.” He walked over to the sliding glass door, his gaze taking in the beach and ocean. “The view is magnificent.”

I know. I fell in love with this house the first time I saw it, when I visited for my job interview.” She sighed. “I’m going to miss living right next to the beach when I move back to Sydney.”

“Are you staying long?”

“Two more months. I need to return to my usual job in March when my new apartment is ready.”

“I’m only here until February, myself.”

“Are you staying in Riverwood?”

He nodded. “In a holiday apartment.”

“I commute into Riverwood for work. It’s a nice town—much bigger than Sapphire Bay.”

“But it doesn’t have a beach.”

“True.” She tipped her head to the side. “Do you work in Riverwood, too?” Julia had mentioned that Zach was a youth worker, and she hadn’t asked for further details. As a rule, Billie tried to avoid church people.

“Yes, at Riverwood Community Church.”

She nodded, her stomach tightening into a hard ball. At least he didn’t appear to recognize her. She didn’t want Julia to learn about her visits to Riverwood’s church.

Footsteps sounded at the front of the house. Julia and Sean appeared in the living room, holding hands and beaming like they were still on their honeymoon.

“Hey, Zach.” Julia gave Zach a brief hug. “Billie, I bought lettuce, although it has probably wilted in the heat.” She stowed the bag of lettuce in the fridge and wiped beads of perspiration off her brow. “It looks like it’s going to be hot tomorrow for Christmas Day.”

Billie smiled. “That’s why I live by the beach.”

Sean greeted Zach and followed his wife into the kitchen. “I’m going out for a surf soon. Anyone else coming?”

Julia planted a kiss on her husband’s cheek. “I’ll get changed, and join you on the beach.”

“Okay.” Sean kissed his wife, embracing her in a gentle hug. “I’ll get ready now.” He stepped away from Julia, his fingers entwined with hers for a moment before heading upstairs.

Billie rolled her eyes. Were her sister and Sean going to be like this for their entire week-long holiday? They had married less than a month ago, and recently returned from a ten-day honeymoon in Hawaii.

Zach drained his glass. “Well, I probably should get settled. I’m singing carols in Riverwood with the youth group before the Christmas Eve service later this evening.”

“Sounds great.” Julia turned to Billie. “Mom and Dad are coming with us to church tonight. What are you planning to do?”

Zach drew his brows together. “Isn’t Billie going, too?”

She cleared the lump in her throat. He had seen her at church. “Um, I don’t know—”

“Billie hasn’t been to church in years, except for weddings and special occasions,” Julia said.

Zach met her gaze, his eyes brimming with questions. “Okay, maybe I was mistaken and Billie has a twin—”

“No, Zach is right.” Billie squared her shoulders, preparing for the inevitable interrogation from her sister. “I started going to the morning service at Riverwood a few weeks ago.”

Julia’s mouth gaped open. “You’re kidding. What brought about your change of heart? Are you bored living here by yourself?”

She stood taller, determined to deflect Julia’s questions. “No big deal, Jules. It was time, that’s all. I thought you’d be happy.” She kept her wide smile in place and held her secret close to her heart, not ready to share with her sister the inspiration behind her decision to return to church.

Book Recommendation – Kept by Sally Bradley

Book Description:

Life has taught Miska Tomlinson that there are no honorable men. Her womanizing brothers, her absentee father, and Mark, the married baseball player who claims to love her—all have proven undependable. But Miska has life under control. She runs her editing business from her luxury condo, stays fit with daily jogs along Chicago’s lakefront, and in her free time blogs anonymously about life as a kept woman.

Enter new neighbor Dillan Foster. Between his unexpected friendship and her father’s sudden reappearance, Miska loses control of her orderly life. Her relationship with Mark deteriorates, and Miska can’t help comparing him to Dillan. His religious views are so foreign, yet the way he treats her is something she’s longed for. But Dillan discovers exactly who she is and what she has done. Too late she finds herself longing for a man who is determined to never look her way again.

When her blog receives unexpected national press, Miska realizes that her anonymity was an illusion. Caught in a scandal about to break across the nation, Miska wonders if the God Dillan talks about would bother with a woman like her—a woman who’s gone too far and done too much.

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I bumped Kept up to the top of my ‘to be read’ pile after my Aussie and NZ writer friends raved about the book on the Australasian Christian Writers blog. You can read Ian Acheson’s review of Kept here.  My dear friend Andrea Grigg, who knows my reading tastes, assured me that I’d love Kept. She was dead right (thanks, Andrea!). If I had to describe this book in only one word, I would choose brilliant. I read the book in less than a day because I just couldn’t put it down.

What was it about Kept that grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let me go? It was different to the typical Christian romance. I will confess that I didn’t particularly like Miska, the heroine and main character, for a large part of the story. It’s unusual for me to enjoy a romance when I’m not fully engaged with the heroine and comfortable spending time in her head.

Miska was real and flawed and her life was very messy. When Dillan and Garrett move into the apartment next door and Garrett’s fiance, Tracy, befriends Miska, she interacts with Christians for the first time. Miska’s dysfunctional family and upbringing contributed to her making a series of decisions that would have big and hard consequences down the track. Miska was closest to her half sister, Adrienne. Their father’s reappearance created additional problems in Miska’s already complex relationship with Adrienne.

Dillan was an assistant pastor who struggled with his strong physical attraction to his wild child neighbour. Miska was initially very scathing of all things Christian. I loved Dillan’s strength of character and his integrity when confronted with temptation and Miska’s lifestyle choices that were so very different to his own.

I really liked the realism in the story. The character’s motivations and actions weren’t sugar coated and the minor characters added significant value to the story. Tracy was a fascinating character and her unconditional love and acceptance of Miska was a highlight in the story. The faith element in Kept was more overt than in many Christian romances, but it worked and the story didn’t feel preachy.

In many ways Kept was all about sex. Miska believed she was in love with Mark, a married professional baseball player who gifted her with large amounts of money when he was in town and warming her bed. Miska was a romance editor who worked from home and lived in a luxurious Chicago apartment with a mortgage she couldn’t afford on her salary alone. There was sexual tension in the story and off-stage bedroom scenes that were tastefully handled. The duplicitous and hedonistic behaviour of a few of the characters in the story was well done and a reflection of our society.

I highly recommend Kept to mature readers who are looking for a cutting edge contemporary Christian romance that tackles real to life issues.

Book Recommendation – Taken by Lisa Harris

Book Description:

MISSING CHILD

Kate Elliot’s suburban life turns upside down when her sister is shot and her niece kidnapped. Unsure of whom to trust, she turns to FBI agent Marcus O’Brian. But Kate doesn’t want to leave the case to the authorities. Against the handsome agent’s orders, she tracks her niece to Paris, and the City of Light quickly becomes a city of danger. Marcus can’t explain why he feels such a strong connection with the headstrong woman, but soon he’s taking on the role of Kate’s protector. Yet when the kidnappers demand a ransom Kate can’t deliver, he’s not sure how much longer he can keep her alive. Now Marcus has the next twenty-four hours to save a stolen child and the woman he’s grown to love.

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I’m a fan of Lisa’s books and I loved reading Taken. I read it quickly, within twenty four hours, because I couldn’t put it down. The story starts in the middle of the action, when Kate’s niece is kidnapped from her mother’s home. Distraught and desperate to rescue her niece, Kate travels from Texas to Paris and soon realizes her own life is at stake. Forced to rely on Marcus, she sees a different side of the handsome FBI agent who is protecting her.

I really enjoyed the French story setting in Paris and the inclusion of many historic and famous landmarks. The characterisation was excellent and I loved the way the romance developed between Marcus and Kate. I wanted to see Marcus and Kate stay alive to achieve their own happily-ever-after ending. The suspense plot kept me guessing until the end, with exciting twists and turns along the way.

I highly recommend Taken to readers who are looking for a high octane and fast paced romantic suspense story set in beautiful Paris.

Book Recommendation – Vegas Vacation by Clare Revell

Book Description:

Former protective services officer, Sgt. Martin Ames, is five weeks short of medical retirement from the Vegas PD when he lands one last case: spoiled English heiress, Lady Tamlyn Bradshaw, whose bodyguard is hospitalized with suspected food poisoning.

Tamlyn is on holiday, her first without her father and his ever present bodyguards. She wants to have fun, not spend the time stuck in a hotel room with a disabled cop, even if he is tall, dark and disturbingly handsome.

When food poisoning becomes murder, passions and tempers flare as Martin attempts to keep Tamlyn safe from the assailant who gains everything on her death.

Narelle: Vegas Vacation is part of the Passport to Romance novella series and I won an ebook copy from a blog giveaway. I enjoyed the story, set in Los Vegas, USA.

Tamlyn is like a bird in a gilded cage, surrounded by hired help in a world of privilege and misery. She desperately wants freedom from her overprotective father, who controls nearly every aspect of her life. She plans a trip to Vegas with her bodyguard in tow, and her itinerary is thrown into chaos when her bodyguard falls ill just after they land on US soil.

Martin, a Vegas cop who was injured in the line of duty, is tasked with the responsibility of looking after Tamlyn while her bodyguard is in hospital. Martin and Tamlyn are drawn to each other, despite coming from vastly different worlds. She thinks nothing of gambling a few hundred dollars in a roulette game, loose change in her eyes and a large amount of money to lose from his perspective. Conservative readers may not be comfortable with the casino setting and gambling in the story.

Martin challenges Tamlyn’s lukewarm faith and her sense of entitlement. Danger surrounds them and the stakes are raised when the distinction between their professional and personal relationship is blurred.

I like bodyguard romances and Vegas Vacation didn’t disappoint. The attraction between Tamlyn and Martin was tangible and realistically portrayed. The story has many of the fairy tale elements that appeal to romance readers. I wanted to see Tamlyn and Martin overcome obstacles, from the past and present, to achieve their happily-ever-after ending. I recommend Vegas Vacation to readers who are looking for a fun, short contemporary romance novella.

ACRBA Tour Swallow Me, NOW! by Melissa Gijsbers

2 – 6 March 2015

is introducing

Swallow Me, Now!

(Lilly Pilly Press, October 2014)

By

Melissa Gijsbers

About the Book:

All Sam wants to do is to fit in at her new school. Feeling alone, and desperately trying to find her place in the world, she concocts an AMAZING story – BUT it backfires on her, and she becomes known as the ‘Evil Genius’s Daughter!’ Can her life get any worse?

About the Author

Melissa Gijsbers started writing when she was in High School during the 1990s, even winning some awards for a short story and a script. For many years, life got in the way of creative writing, however she did start blogging around 2006.

She currently lives in Melbourne, Australia with her two sons and a pet blue tongue lizard.

Narelle’s thoughts

I enjoyed reading Swallow Me, NOW! and I read the whole story in one sitting. The story is easy to read and the target audience is children aged 7-12 years.

Sam is in Year Five and the story starts on Sam’s first day at a new primary (elementary) school in suburban Melbourne. Sam’s parents were missionaries in Nepal, and she recently returned to Australia after many years abroad. An Aussie school is a culture shock for Sam. We follow her journey as she struggles to fit in at her new school. The story addresses important social issues that confront many children. I highly recommend Swallow Me, NOW! for children who are looking for a fun story with a positive and inspiring message of hope.

My daughter’s thoughts: I liked how the story is realistic and shows how hard it can be for kids to adapt to a new school. Even if you’re not starting at a new school, bullying can still happen to you. I also loved how Sam was very creative and was brave enough to talk about the mean things that were happening to her. I understood why she finally fought back and didn’t just let it keep happening to her. The story was fun and exciting. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

We received a complimentary review copy from the author.
