Yesterday Now and Always by Sara Beth Williams

He never expected to fall in love with her all over again.

After high school, Jake Monroe had the future all mapped out for him and high school sweetheart Audrey Wright. When Audrey is gifted a trip to New Zealand after her graduation and then spontaneously extends the trip from three months to twelve months, Jake is shattered.

From the age of six, Audrey Wright grew up in Trinity Lakes Washington as a dual NZ-US citizen. Adopted as a toddler, she’d never known her biological parents. During a whirlwind trip to New Zealand at eighteen to visit relatives, Audrey encounters a half-brother she never knew existed and makes the split decision to remain in New Zealand to rediscover the family she never dared to dream she’d find. But the cost of her spontaneous decision may be much higher than she realizes.

Eight years later, Jake returns to Trinity Lakes to fulfill his childhood dream of owning his own restaurant. Encountering Audrey again throws a wrench into his carefully laid out plans and dredges up old attraction that should’ve died when she’d chosen New Zealand over him. Regardless, he’s drawn to her as he was years prior. But mending the past and overcoming the anger and bitterness will take a miracle.

A small town, second chance high school sweethearts’ reunion, contemporary Christian Romance, part of the Trinity Lakes Romance series.

When Savannah erupts into riots and intrigue following the passage of the Stamp Act, Ansel is tasked with identifying a spy passing sensitive information to the Liberty Boys and the author of anonymous letters threatening those loyal to the governor. Book Recommendation – Love, Unscripted by Denise Hunter

Book Description:

The perfect boyfriend only exists on paper…doesn’t he?

Fresh off the heels of a bad breakup, Chloe Anderson poured her heart into penning the perfect boyfriend—and the result was an off-the-charts debut beach read that resonated with women worldwide. Now, Chloe’s scripted hero is headed for Hollywood, with her book destined to become a major motion picture.

When Chloe gets wind that silver screen bad boy Liam Hamilton has been cast as the ideal-in-every-way hero of her novel, she’s horrified by the film director’s choice. How could a player like Liam possibly do Chloe’s perfect hero justice? Unafraid to speak her mind, Chloe lets her executive producer know she’s one hundred percent opposed to the casting. And oops—the call is on speakerphone, where the annoyingly attractive Hollywood star hears Chloe’s unbridled outrage firsthand.

With Liam’s reputation already on the rocks, his agent concocts a PR plan to upgrade Liam’s image while putting the story—and the film—in the spotlight. The catch? During the movie’s filming in Chloe’s cute hometown of Stillwater, North Carolina, Chloe and Liam will fake a wholesome, committed relationship. Both stand to gain something from the arrangement. Liam’s fans will see him in a new light, while Chloe can boost her struggling social media following and further her writing career. What could possibly go wrong?

As author and actor navigate the waters of the PR relationship, they’re unprepared when their professional agreement turns into an actual friendship. And when serious sparks start to fly—well, that’s an unread chapter for both of them.

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Love, Unscripted, a fun story that’s set in a small North Carolina beach town. Chloe is a debut contemporary romance novelist who poured her heart and soul into her story that has resonated with readers. The runaway success of her book has culminated in a dream-come-true movie deal. Chloe wants the studio to find the perfect actor to play Ledger, her beloved hero who is her ideal book boyfriend.

Liam is a successful actor with a less than stellar relationship history, according to the gossips. Chloe is horrified to learn that Liam has been signed to play Ledger. Their awkward first meeting leads to a hilarious situation that snowballs into a media frenzy. The solution proposed by Liam, and backed by his people, is for Liam and Chloe to embark on a fake relationship. A steady relationship would improve Liam’s image and assist Chloe in building her social media following.

Chloe manages the front of house of her family’s restaurant where her brother is the chef. Her best friend owns the book store in town and is one of Chloe’s biggest supporters. Chloe spends time on the film set during the day and works evenings at the restaurant.

An adorable romance develops as Chloe and Liam’s initial business relationship turns into a friendship with sparks flying that feel real rather than fabricated for the paparazzi cameras. Chloe and Liam discover that their preconceived ideas about each other are far from the truth. They each carry emotional baggage that has made them wary of commitment. When secrets are revealed, the difficult circumstances challenge them both to work through trust issues and consider if they can risk everything for love.

I liked how the side characters in the tightknit beach community embraced their town becoming part of a film set for the summer. I recommend Love, Unscripted to contemporary romance readers who like small town celebrity fake relationship romances that are clean reads from a Christian worldview.

A ROMANCE WORTH THE CHALLENGE

Loyally, Luke by Pepper Basham

Sometimes love means embracing the good, the bad . . . and even the impossible.

Dear Reader,

My name is Luke Edgewood, and there are few things in life that I require. Mainly black coffee. And flannel. And lots of solitude. And my dogs, Chewy and Indie. What I don’t need is romance, so I have no plans to change my thirty-year-old bachelor status anytime soon.

But my youngest sister thinks that by accepting a short-term construction job in the small European country of Skymar, I’m going to follow along in her footsteps and discover my own romantic adventure. Nope. Bah humbug. The End. This time, her rom-com-movie senses are totally wrong.

Or maybe not. Because I’ve met a Grace Kelly look-alike who is annoying . . . until she isn’t. But she is impossible. As in, nothing can happen between us because she is a literal princess. Even though that’s easy to forget when we’re working together to restore a castle-like orphanage in a secluded mountain town and “forced proximity” includes a small closet, a secret one-hundred-year-old journal, and the tactile memory of an off-limits royal in my arms.

Basically, the whole situation has turned into an ooey gooey magical snow globe of romantic tropes complete with cute kids and an actual ball. Now, even my sentences are starting to sound like mush. Ugh. Send high levels of testosterone my way—I’m going to need it.

Loyally,

Luke

Armed with walkie-talkies and battle plans, these relationship experts–who’ve dubbed themselves the “Shippers”–target hostess Lacey Anderson and director Jonathan King in their romantic schemes. But the young couple refuses to cooperate. They’ve been on the “love boat” together before, and it went down in flames.

Boss matchmaker Emily Windsor has orchestrated multiple romantic successes, and these two upstarts certainly won’t get the best of her. The chemistry between Lacey and Jonathan is obvious, but the couple rebuffs every outlandish plot and “coincidental” meeting, forcing the matchmakers to chart a new course to true love–all while inadvertently thwarting drug smugglers threatening to ruin their floating home on the ocean.

This laugh-out-loud rom-com features loveable characters, over-the-top situations reminiscent of 1950s sitcoms, and a dash of mystery. The toe-curling romance will push the reader overboard and all in with Shannon Dunlap’s new series.

Jailing James by Eric M. Hill

The Agency

The Three Sisters Detective Agency specializes in helping wrongfully convicted people get their convictions overturned.

The Convict

James Hunter’s fate was sealed. Tried. Convicted. Sentenced to death. A slam dunk case. He was guilty as sin. Or was he?

One day the Three Sisters Detective Agency received a desperate letter from a man convicted of murder—an innocent man, he insisted. Sure, like so many brothers who had grown up without a father in a dangerous environment, he had done some things he wasn’t proud of. Things that explained his long rap sheet. But he had never killed anyone.

Nicki, Terri, and Rosalyn had heard it all before. Hundreds of times. “I’m innocent. They got the wrong man.” This time, however, they were convinced that an innocent man had been condemned to die.

The Writ

The Three Sisters Detective Agency achieved one of their greatest legal victories when they helped James become a free man.

The Mistake

By Terri’s own admission, she’s not the best judge of character when it comes to dating men. This was confirmed when she sat with James near a lake one evening soon after his case was overturned.

James wanted more than conversation. To make sure he got what he wanted, he told her with a smile, “I killed Sugar Bun.” Terri had to fight for her life to make it out of this man’s truck alive.

The Fix

The three sisters can’t let this go. They’ve got to make it right. The only way to do this is by Jailing James.

He only offered her passage to Alaska. But they end up fighting for something bigger along the way…

Maggie McDougal is determined to save her family’s land after her parents’ sudden deaths. And if that means leaving the sandy shores of Lake Michigan and traveling across the country to Washington Territory in search of her brother so he can claim the land, then so be it. Anything is better than watching the land she loves fall into her uncle’s greedy, conniving hands.

The trouble is, when the ship that her brother works on arrives in Bellingham, her brother isn’t on it. But Captain Sacha Amos is. And when he offers to take Maggie north to Alaska where she can meet her brother on his new ship, she has little choice about saying yes.

Or after she discovers the secret study that a scientist is conducting aboard Sacha’s ship—one that just might put an end to seals being illegally killed for their pelts.

But seal pelts are worth a lot of money, and if word leaks about what Sacha’s trying to do, he’s going to find himself in the crosshairs of some very powerful men.

Caught between her mission to save her family’s land and the escalating tension in Alaska, Maggie soon finds herself fighting for something that’s bigger than just property or family ties. And she just might discover a new home along the way—one that offers more warmth and love than she ever imagined possible.

From a USA Today bestselling author comes a frontier family saga filled with a protector hero, forced-proximity, found family, and love that heals wounded hearts.

Ahoti: A Story of Tamar by Miriam Feinberg Vamosh and Eva Marie Everson

A masterful retelling of Tamar’s story of redemption, faith, healing, and justice

“As an author of biblical fiction, I know the amount of research and work that goes into crafting a story like this. Miriam Feinberg Vamosh and Eva Marie Everson comprise the perfect team.” —Jerry B. Jenkins, The Chosen series

Ravaged by one brother, silenced and betrayed by another, and abandoned by her father, Tamar—once beloved daughter of the king of Israel, and healer of the court—suddenly finds herself in exile, fleeing for her life. But the story continues where the scriptures end: a dangerous journey and tenacious pursuit of her true identity and calling brings her full circle, to her rightful place in the kingdom.Connoisseurs of Biblical fiction will love Ahoti.

  • Ahoti brings to life the Old Testament story of the biblical princess Tamar, the daughter of David, King of Israel.
  • The familiar Bible story ends with Tamar living “desolate” (2 Samuel 13:20), but master storytellers Miriam Feinberg Vamosh and Eva Marie Everson take readers beyond this sorrowful ending to a horizon of hope, thanks to their brilliant adaptation of an ancient anonymous manuscript, purportedly written by Gad the Seer (1 Chronicles 29:29), which was discovered in India in the early 18th century. Beyond the biblical text, this manuscript provides a surprising conclusion, which has powerful modern-day significance.
  • Rich with cultural, biblical, and historic detail, and spiritually compelling, Ahoti will inspire readers to overcome humiliation, pain, betrayal, and bitterness, to embrace a life of purpose.

Book Recommendation – A Run at Love by Toni Shiloh

Book Description:

A CONTENDER RUNNING FOR THE ROSES

As a Black woman in a field with little diversity, Piper McKinney is determined to make her mark on the horse-racing world. Raised on a Thoroughbred farm in Kentucky, Piper’s dream is for her horse to win the prestigious Kentucky Derby. With the help of her best friend and trainer, Tucker Hale, she gains national attention but must grapple with the complications that arise when a journalist delves into her past as a transracial adoptee.

A BEST FRIEND RACING FOR LOVE

In an effort to win Piper’s heart, Tucker formulates a plan to train Piper’s horse to victory, hoping to prove himself to her, her parents, and his own self-doubts. Then a shocking scandal hits the media, implicating both Piper and her parents, and she and Tucker will have to survive the onslaught to find their way to the winner’s circle–and each other.

A ROMANCE WORTH THE CHALLENGE

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading A Run at Love, the second book in Toni Shiloh’s Love in the Spotlight series. The story is set in Kentucky in the horse racing world.

I’m pretty sure A Run at Love is the first Christian fiction book I’ve read that’s intricately connected to horse racing. Horse racing industry critics have expressed concerns regarding problem gambling and animal welfare. There’s no gambling in the story and I absolutely loved the way Piper and Tucker looked after the horses and animals in their care. Piper’s goats were both troublesome and hilarious.

Piper was adopted as a young child and moved to the USA with her wealthy adoptive parents who were successful and well known in Kentucky horse racing circles. Piper’s love for horses inspired her dream to own a colt that would go on to win the famous and prestigious Kentucky Derby. The story opens with Piper taking steps to fulfil her Derby dream.

Tucker is Piper’s lifelong best friend who has followed in his father’s footsteps and worked for Piper’s family as an assistant horse trainer. Tucker has loved Piper for years and has a list of reasons for why he’s not yet good enough to take a risk, step out of the friend zone, and ask Piper out on a date. His guy friends, who feature in other books in the series, are his Christian support network who keep him grounded.

Piper has loved Tucker for years and she’s afraid she’d lose him as her best friend if he didn’t reciprocate her feelings. She has grown up in a predominantly white community and experienced racism that has shaped the way she views the world. Her love for Jesus is her anchor as she navigates complex relationships with her adoptive parents.

Piper and Tucker’s romance is sweet and they make an adorable couple as they work together and begin to believe their hopes and dreams could come true. A family scandal puts Piper in the media spotlight and places multiple relationships in jeopardy. I recommend A Run at Love to contemporary romance readers who like best friends-to-more celebrity romances with depth that are set in the horse racing world and include a relevant faith element in the story.

Romance in the land down under

Book Recommendation – Loyally, Luke by Pepper Basham

Book Description:

Loyally,

Luke

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Loyally, Luke, the third book in Pepper Basham’s Skymar series set on a fictional European island in the North Sea. I’ve been looking forward to reading Luke’s romance story and it was worth the wait.

Luke is a down-to-earth American guy who’s a carpenter by trade and likes the simple things in life. He has a dry sense of humor and tolerates the ridiculous nonsense that’s regularly spouted by his younger sister, Penelope. She’d love to see Luke star in a real life Hallmark-style royalty romance with all the tropes. Luke can’t stand sappy romance movies and he has zero interest in moving in high and mighty royal circles.

Ellie is a princess who has been offline for a few years to recover from a bad reputation she gained in the gossip columns. Ellie wants to please her parents, the King and Queen of Skymar, and return to her life as a working royal. Ellie is quietly working on a charity project in a remote part of Skymar and renovating an orphanage where she’s a patron.

Luke is only in Skymar for a few months and he ends up working on the orphanage project with Ellie. Like Ellie, he’s loyal to his family. His home is with his family in a small Blue Ridge Mountains town.

Luke and Ellie’s meet cute is hilarious. Luke has no idea that Ellie is a celebrity and real life princess. A delightful romance develops as Luke and Ellie become more than friends and are challenged to consider if they could have a future together.

This is Luke’s story and it’s fun to read a romance that’s more slanted toward the male viewpoint. The group chats in the epistolary style are amusing and there are fewer epistolary story elements than in the other Skymar books. I read this series out of order – Positively, Penelope (book 2) then Authentically, Izzy (book 1) before reading Luke’s story (book 3). The stories are standalone romances but I’d recommend reading the books in order, if possible, to gain a fuller appreciation of the banter and humor in the family group chat conversations.

I recommend Loyally, Luke to contemporary romance readers who like different worlds and undercover princess royalty romances with epistolary style content and a relevant faith element in the story.

Many thanks to Thomas Nelson and Net Galley for the advanced reader copy. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Book Recommendation – A Father for Her Boys by Danielle Grandinetti

Book Description:

A family scarred by tragedy…

Will find hope in an unlikely gardener

A summer escape to the quaint little town of River Cove is just what auntie turned mom Sofia Russo—and her troubled, energetic nephews—needs. It’s a chance to heal from grief and her broken foot. But a surprising friendship with compassionate gardener Nathaniel Turner shows Sofia just how much she’s been missing…and how much she stands to lose when summer ends.

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading A Father for Her Boys, set in a small Wisconsin town. Sofia is a single parent to her orphaned nephews and she’s struggling to manage the young boys who miss their mom. Sofia jumps at the opportunity to housesit for the summer in a small town, take a break from her church office admin role, heal her broken ankle, and spend more time building a better relationship with her boys.

Nathaniel is a landscape gardener who looks after the grounds at the house where Sofia is house sitting. He avoids romantic entanglements after the painful loss of his childhood sweetheart, but he can’t resist helping Sofia and her adorable boys.

Sofia and Nathaniel form a beautiful friendship that could turn into something more as a town project brings them closer together and challenges them to consider a future as a family. I recommend A Father for Her Boys to contemporary romance readers who like friends to more single parent romances with a strong faith element in the story.

Grief has held Eve “Kensi” Kensington captive long enough. Determined to move on after the death of her fiancé six years ago, Kensi moves to St. Alyn to help Ezra with the new boat book business. That there’s a great therapist on the island is just a bonus.

When the West Coast Agency learns that the former fiancée of a deceased informant is under the radar, Simon Garver is tasked to protect her—without her knowledge, if possible. Great. Listening in on her therapy sessions might be the worst thing he’s ever had to do as an agent.

Nope… scrap that. Falling for his client takes the cake.

When Kensi learns Simon has been keeping secrets from her, she’s done. Too bad the arrival of a guy sent to “take care of her” means she needs him. She’ll cooperate until she’s safe, toss the trust exercises her therapist has insisted on in the trash, and get back to her job on Ezra’s boat.

If only her heart would listen to the plan…

Take a trip to the Suamalie Islands where palm trees sway, the sand and sea pulse with life, and the people will steal your heart.

Elior, digging her heels into responsibility and reason, is determined to ignore Jeremiah and the feelings he stirs in her. But it’s hard to ignore a man who hires her to type letters to a mystery woman, and even harder to ignore how those letters show her a different Jeremiah than Elior expected to see.

The British Booksellers by Kristy Cambron

Inspired by real accounts of the Forgotten Blitz bombings, The British Booksellers highlights the courage of those whose lives were forever changed by war—and the stories that bind us in the fight for what matters most.

A tenant farmer’s son had no business daring to dream of a future with an earl’s daughter, but that couldn’t keep Amos Darby from his secret friendship with Charlotte Terrington…until the reality of the Great War sobered youthful dreams. Now decades later, he bears the brutal scars of battles fought in the trenches and their futures that were stolen away. His return home doesn’t come with tender reunions, but with the hollow fulfillment of opening a bookshop on his own and retreating as a recluse within its walls.

When the future Earl of Harcourt chose Charlotte to be his wife, she knew she was destined for a loveless match. Though her heart had chosen another long ago, she pledges her future even as her husband goes to war. Twenty-five years later, Charlotte remains a war widow who divides her days between her late husband’s declining estate and operating a quaint Coventry bookshop—Eden Books, lovingly named after her grown daughter. And Amos is nothing more than the rival bookseller across the lane.

As war with Hitler looms, Eden is determined to preserve her father’s legacy. So when an American solicitor arrives threatening a lawsuit that could destroy everything they’ve worked so hard to preserve, mother and daughter prepare to fight back. But with devastation wrought by the Luftwaffe’s local blitz terrorizing the skies, battling bookshops—and lost loves, Amos and Charlotte—must put aside their differences and fight together to help Coventry survive.

From deep in the trenches of the Great War to the storied English countryside and the devastating Coventry Blitz of World War II, The British Booksellers explores the unbreakable bonds that unite us through love, loss, and the enduring solace that can be found between the pages of a book.

Reverend Overly teaches that no one is irredeemable, but even as Ephraim is falling in love with her, Birdie remains convinced that she’s past saving. After all she’s been through, can she ever believe that God’s redemption wipes every soul clean? And can Ephraim convince her that God loves her more than she can grasp—and that he does, too?

Book Recommendation – The Roads We Follow by Nicole Deese

Book Description:

As the youngest daughter of a country music legend, Raegan Farrow longs to establish an identity away from the spotlight and publish her small-town romances under a pen name. But after her dream is dashed when she won’t exploit her mother’s fame to further her own career, she hears a rumor from a reliable source regarding a tell-all being written about the Farrow family. Making matters worse, the unknown author has gone to great lengths to remain anonymous until publication.

Raegan chooses to keep the tell-all a secret from her scandal-leery sisters as they embark on a two-week, cross-country road trip at their mother’s request and makes it her mission to expose the identity of the author behind the unsanctioned biography. But all is complicated when she discovers their hired bus driver, Micah Davenport, has a hidden agenda of his own–one involving both of their mothers and an old box of journals. As they rely on each other to find the answers they seek, the surprising revelations they unearth will steer them toward their undeniable connection and may even lead them down the most unexpected of paths.

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading The Roads We Follow, the second book in the Fog Harbor Romance series. I read the book quickly, within twenty-four hours, because I had to keep turning the page to find out what happens next.

Raegan has two older sisters and their family situation is complicated. Her mother is Luella Farrow, a country music superstar. The lives of Luella’s adult daughters revolve around Luella’s music career and the family record label. Raegan’s oldest sister, Adele, is the competent and bossy sister who makes all the high level family and business decisions. Hattie is the middle sister who’s struggling to cope with a nasty child custody dispute.

Raegan works for the family business and dreams about being a published author using a pseudonym that has no connection with her famous family. The story opens with Raegan meeting Chip, an acquisitions editor from Fog Harbor Books in San Francisco, while he’s in Nashville for a writing conference. Chip is interested in pitching Raegan’s fiction book proposal to the publishing board, but Raegan’s reluctance to use her real name to build her author platform is a road block. Chip gives Raegan a heads up that there’s an industry rumor circulating that someone has written a scandalous and unauthorized biography of Luella Farrow’s life.

Micah’s mother, Lynn, recently passed away. He’s on a mission to learn more about his mother’s life during her time in Luella’s band. Micah applies for the bus driver job for the Farrow family’s cross country road trip from Nashville to Washington. He believes Luella holds the key to finding the answers from his past.

A lovely romance between Raegan and Micah unfolds as they travel in the vintage tour bus to the west coast and uncover family secrets that have massive implications for their families. I loved how the mysteries in the story were revealed and challenged the characters in multiple ways. I recommend The Roads We Follow to contemporary romance readers who like celebrity road trip stories with complex family dynamics, an intriguing mystery subplot, and a relevant faith element in the story.

Book Recommendation – Love in Tandem by Becca Kinzer

Book Description:

She’s perfectly content leading a quiet life in her small hometown. He’s an adventurer with unquenchable wanderlust. The two couldn’t be any more opposite if they tried. But a tandem bicycle and a 500-mile road trip just might change all that.

After a failed engagement and her mother’s battle with cancer, Charlotte Carter’s life is finally turning around now that she’s landed a dream job teaching music. What she didn’t see coming was the imminent closure of the school’s music program. She’s determined to save it, even if it means getting creative. There’s no way she’s chalking this up as just another failure in her book of recent embarrassments.

Zach Bryant is back in town just long enough to see his brother Ben get married and then he’s off traveling the world again. He never imagined he’d run into Charlotte Carter, his brother’s ex-fiancé, or that everyone would believe he and Charlotte are an item. He certainly didn’t dream he’d end up riding a tandem bicycle hundreds of miles with her in an attempt to raise funds for a defunct music program, but how can he say no when the prize money would help him out of his financial predicament too?

Charlotte is sure she can set aside her differences with Zach long enough to cross the finish line and win the giant cash prize . . . can’t she? A few hundred miles in, she’s questioning her deeply held assumptions about Zach and wondering if maybe tandem biking is only the start of their biggest adventure yet.

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Love in Tandem, a LOL funny romcom featuring a fun bike riding road trip adventure. Charlotte doesn’t like being outdoors. The story opens on the last day of the school year in a small Illinois town where Charlotte is having a hilarious close encounter with a bee. She’s committed to her music teaching role and devastated when she learns the funding for next year has fallen through. Charlotte is prepared to go to great lengths to raise the money needed to keep the music program and her job alive.

Zach has known Charlotte and her family for years. He travels the world working as an outdoor adventure tour guide. Zach has returned to Bailey Springs for his brother Ben’s wedding to a woman Zach used to date. Two years earlier, Ben had broken off his engagement to Charlotte only a week before their wedding date.

Charlotte and Zach reconnect in an unusual way and end up on a tandem bike riding adventure with a goal of winning a quarter of a million dollars. A ridiculous comedy of errors lands them in an accidental fake relationship situation. The stakes are high and their lives are headed in different geographical directions after they finish the ride. Charlotte and Zach encounter many obstacles in their often amusing and always challenging journey to happily-ever-after.

I appreciated the sweet subplot involving Charlotte’s sister, Sophia, who literally crashes into the life of a perfect stranger. I recommend Love in Tandem to contemporary romance readers who like fake relationship romantic comedies with a fun cycling road trip adventure and a relevant faith element in the story.
