Narelle’s Book Recommendation:

I enjoyed reading Kate Landry Has a Plan, the second book in Rebekah Millet’s Beignets for Two series set in New Orleans. Kate is a busy single parent who’s raising her thirteen-year-old niece, Hayley. They live above Beignets and Books Cafe, that Kate inherited from her grandmother in the Garden District on Saint Charles Avenue.

It’s Mardi Gras season and Kate holds functions in her renovated cafe courtyard. The story opens with a Bridezilla delaying Kate at the cafe, which makes her run late to collect Hayley from the library. Kate calls the librarian and leaves an apology message.

When Kate arrives at the library, she’s mortified to discover the new temporary librarian, who listened to her embarrassing phone message, is Micah. He was Kate’s first crush in seventh grade and their library meet cute is awkward and amusing.

Micah’s back in town to help care for his father after living in Colorado since college. The story is in first person from Kate’s point of view, and we learn more about Micah, including why his marriage didn’t last, as the story progresses.

I enjoyed journeying with Kate in the story. She’s a go-getter with business smarts and a quirky sense of humor who adores her niece. Hayley loves hanging out at the library, which means Kate can’t avoid seeing Micah. Hayley is also desperate to own a puppy.

Kate and Micah’s romance is delightful and sweet. They have many problems to overcome, including how to implement Kate’s plan. I loved how all the story threads came together in a satisfying story ending. The charming New Orleans setting, with its unique culture, food and delicious beignets, provided a beautiful backdrop for the story. The fascinating and quirky cast of side characters, and the animals in the story, added many humorous moments.

I recommend Kate Landry Has a Plan to contemporary romance readers who like midlife second chances romances set in New Orleans with family drama and a relevant faith element in the story.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. Many thanks to Bethany House for the advanced reader copy. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Book Recommendation – Where I Found You by Betsy St. Amant

Book Description:

From beloved author Betsy St. Amant comes an enemies to more, Hatfields and McCoys swoon-worthy contemporary romance set in a small beach town that reminds us that true love is worth fighting for.

Noah Hebert recently inherited the Blue Pirogue Inn—along with all its problems. He needs money to keep his beloved childhood home from being shut down by his family’s longtime nemesis, Isaac Bergeron. So when Noah’s lawyer approaches him about an additional segment of his late grandfather’s will, it’s just in the nick of time. But even from beyond the grave, his grandfather is up to his usual games. In order to receive the last portion of inheritance, Noah must follow the clues. But there’s one condition…

Magnolia Blossom Cafe manager Elisa Bergeron is shocked to discover an acquaintance from the local Puzzlers Club left her something in his will—and even more surprised to discover they are clues to a portion of his estate. When she learns she must work with introverted inn-owner Noah Hebert to solve the puzzle, she’s torn. Growing up in the middle of a multi-generational feud between their families, she’s been taught by her father Isaac that Heberts can’t be trusted.

When these two exes must work together to save their future, will love get a second chance or will the longstanding family feud claim another generation?

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Where I Found You, the first book in Betsy St. Amant’s Magnolia Bay contemporary romance series set in a coastal Louisiana small town. Noah spent his childhood in Magnolia Bay and relocated to Shreveport after his parents divorced. He loved spending summer vacations in Magnolia Bay with his paternal grandfather at their family owned Blue Pirogue Inn.

Noah recently inherited the inn from his grandfather and he’s only back in Magnolia Bay to facilitate the necessary repair work to reopen it. He has actively avoided seeing Elisa—the girl he once dated and can’t forget.

Elisa manages the Magnolia Blossom Cafe. She graduated from culinary school and put aside her dreams of opening her own restaurant when her mother, who used to cook at the cafe, passed away. Elisa is emotionally attached to the cafe and its big-hearted owner, Mama Delia. Elisa has heard that Noah is back in town and assumes he’s avoiding her. She’s reluctant to see him and dig up past hurts from their failed romance.

Elisa’s father is the town building inspector who can’t stand Noah and his family. Twelve years ago, the multigenerational feud between their families contributed to Elisa and Noah’s romance ending.

The meet cute between Noah and Elisa is awkward, embarrassing, and amusing for the townsfolk who witnessed it. Noah and Elisa aren’t happy when a stipulation in Noah’s grandfather’s will forces them to work together to solve a puzzle that will unlock a portion of Noah’s inheritance. They search for clues and can’t ignore the underlying attraction that’s pulling them closer. I loved seeing how their romance developed as they overcame past issues and challenging family dynamics.

There were many hilarious moments and hijinks as they raced against the clock to solve the puzzle mystery. The quirky side characters were delightful and added to the small town charm. I appreciated how the faith threads in the story came together in a satisfying story resolution.

I recommend When I Found You to contemporary romance readers who like childhood sweetheart enemies-to-more second chance romances with an intriguing puzzle mystery and a relevant faith element in the story.

Many thanks to JustRead Tours and Sunrise Publishing for the advanced reader copy.

Book Recommendation – Some Like It Scot by Pepper Basham

Book Description:

She lives her life on the fly. His heart is double-knotted to home. Can two different souls create a life together?

Popular travel writer and podcaster Katie Campbell roams the world collecting other people’s stories. She’s built a career as “Miss Adventure,” known for saying yes to anything new–country, food, or experience–and predictably finding those adventures taking a downward turn into misadventures.

Offered the chance to explore her ancestral roots through a three-week Edwardian experience, Katie finds herself immersed in the beauty and eccentricity of Scotland. In her period attire, with traditional foods and activities, the opportunities for misadventures are endless, especially with the presence of a maniacal macaw, a jealous co-worker, and an all-too-surly Scotsman.

Reclusive and protective Graeme MacKerrow doesn’t venture far from his island home. A stoic Scotsman, Graeme’s comfort zone has always been family, and after his sister’s death, he’s even more determined to save the MacKerrow ancestral home and keep those he loves close. The sudden intrusion of a six-foot-one American lass, famous for her traveling misfortunes, was far from his plan.

As this world of folklore, community, and woodworkers-in-kilts tempts Katie to discover her own story, could this one grand series of misadventures lead her directly to where she belongs? And would a settled-in-Scot ever risk loosening his grip on what’s familiar to allow a wanderlust writer a home in his heart? How could their very different worlds share the same page of life’s story when “home” is in two very different places? But maybe home–and the future–isn’t quite what either one imagined it would be. Maybe home is less about a place . . . and more about a person.

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Some Like it Scot, a delightful romantic comedy set in Scotland. Katie is a jet-setting travel writer and podcaster from North Carolina who lands in Scotland for three weeks. She’s known for her hilarious misadventures and for finding herself in ridiculous situations. Her latest adventure on the Isle of Mull is an opportunity to immerse herself in an Edwardian Experience with Downton Abbey vibes. Katie has Scottish ancestry, courtesy of her late grandfather, and she’s fascinated by Scottish culture.

Graeme is a down-to-earth Scotsman and a talented woodworker. His family is close knit, and he cares for his late twin sister’s young son. Graeme guards his heart after being burned by his ex-fiance who left him to pursue her career goals.

Graeme’s family recently purchased their ancestral Scottish family estate that was sold a century earlier. The upkeep of the property is expensive, and they rent out their grand home for six months to an eccentric English couple who want to create an Edwardian Experience vacation destination.

The meet cute between Katie and Graeme is hilarious. They are from different worlds and Katie isn’t staying in Scotland. Or anywhere. Her work life is like one long vacation and she’s careful to avoid getting close to people or putting down roots. She discovers she can’t outrun her emotional baggage from her childhood and family situation.

I loved the many LOL moments in the story that draw Katie and Graeme closer together. Their romance is sweet and poignant as they deal with challenging situations and past hurts. Sometimes Katie edges close to moving into unreliable narrator territory as she wrestles with deep-seated issues. Graeme is her rock. He sees the real Katie, and her vulnerabilities, which are different from her happy-go-lucky and carefree public persona.

The quirky cast of side characters, and quite a few animals, create a charming Scottish village that I’d love to visit. I recommend Some Like it Scot to contemporary romance readers who like Scottish vacation romcoms with an Edwardian flavour that includes found family themes and a relevant faith element in the story.

Many thanks to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy.
